World AIDS Day

Today is World AIDS Day, and The BradLands is participating in Link and Think, a global observance of World AIDS Day in the personal web publishing communities. Formerly "A Day With(out) Weblogs", the project involves hundreds of webloggers, journalers, diarists and other personal website publishers, each linking to resources about HIV/AIDS or publishing personal stories about how the AIDS pandemic has affected them.

As of 5 pm CST today, more than 800 websites had signed on to participate, representing nearly two dozen countries and an audience of thousands of readers. The diversity of links to resources is amazing. The personal stories recounted are fascinating. It is truly an honor to be involved with is project, and a privilege to coordinate it.

Two of my favorite websites are observing World AIDS Day in ways appropriate and unique to them. MetaFilter, a community weblog, features links and discussion related to HIV/AIDS topics. Over at the {fray}, the home of personal narrative on the web, readers are sharing their stories.

St. Louis area AIDS resources:

• AIDS Foundation of St. Louis produces the annual AIDS Walk (formerly From All Walks of Life) and funds local organizations providing direct services to people living with AIDS.
• St. Louis Effort of AIDS provides education on the prevention of HIV infection and comprehensive support services for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
• Blacks Assisting Blacks Against AIDS advocates, educates and acts as a resource for the St. Louis metropolitan African American community, with particular regard to support services and resource development for individuals who are HIV challenged.
• Doorways is an interfaith AIDS residence program that provides housing options in the St. Louis metropolitan area for people with HIV/AIDS, housing up to 500 persons each month through its rent/mortgage subsidies, and independent and supportive living facilities.
• PAWS St. Louis (Pets Are Wonderful Support) provides education and services to people living with HIV/AIDS so they can keep their pets with them as long as possible.
