SXSW 2004 Day One Point Five

My spring vacation is officially underway, begun last night with my arrival in Austin and my retirement to the comfortable environs of Brava House with my companion for the week, the inimitable Lance Arthur.

I'm here, of course, for the annual South by Southwest Interactive festival and conference, which begins in earnest tomorrow but will be inaugurated, for me, at dinner tonight with 60 or so of my dearest chums and a few new ones. The soggy weather, which promises to clear as the week progresses, may have put a kibosh on post-dinner outdoor karaoke (Update: I'm told they've moved the catterwauling indoors at Polly Esther, so we may give it a go after all.), but no doubt we'll find some amenable spot to continue lifting glasses after Break Bread With Brad.

So far, though, it's been a relaxed and thoroughly relaxing start. A tasty dinner and a few margaritas at Z Tejas last night, followed by Shiners and monkeyshines on the porch of our manse and, somewhat later, a much needed and enjoyed late sleep in the first B of our B&B.

Today, a bit of knocking about Austin, a quick bite and my conference registration accomplished, I'm taking my book back to the porch swing and bracing for bread breaking.
