Backstage at Snopes
OOMPA-LOOMPA ON B'WAY? This is a question I probably should know the answer to, as the concept sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't. In this age of big-scale, big-budget productions such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, has anyone made noises about adapting Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as a Broadway stage musical?MYTH CONCEPTIONS: Salon interviews the folks behind Snopes, the urban legend reference site and ammo dump for debunking tons of 'Net-borne hoaxes.
NOTA BENE: Brad's Birthday (Observed) will be celebrated this weekend at an undisclosed location in the Midwest. If we do it right, there will be no word from me here for 96 hours starting Friday. Do not be alarmed.
VCR ALERTS: Here in St. Louis, KETC will not air the premiere broadcast of PBS's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Concert tonight as part of the national feed; it will be broadcast instead on Friday night at 10:30 pm. It will not be repeated on the overnight schedule, so set those VCRs carefully.
Also of interest this month on Channel 9: American Masters: Richard Rodgers, The Sweetest Sounds — with performances by Shirley Jones, Ella Fitzgerald and others — will air on Sunday (11/4 at 8 pm) and will be repeated Tuesday (11/6, 2 am) and Friday (11/9, 10:30 pm).
THE ORDER OF THE SWEATY PALMS: Today's mail happily brought my long-desired copy of Lileks' first published collection of columns and essays, Notes of a Nervous Man. Recently acquired: The Gallery of Regrettable Food. Also on order: Mr. Obvious. Desperately seeking: An affordable copy of Falling Up the Stairs. 'Cuz, you know, I'm a fan.
